Identify Potential Choking Hazards

18 May 2021

The Small Parts Cylinder and Templates A, B and E can help you identify unsafe toys with the potential risk of choking. The Cylinder and Templates mimic the mouth cavity of a young child. If a toy or a removable component of the toy can fit entirely inside the Cylinder or pass through the Templates, it could present a choking risk to children.

Small Parts Cylinder

Place a toy or any removable component of a toy intended for children under 3 years of age, without compressing it and in any orientation into the Small Parts Cylinder. If the toy or the removable component fits entirely within the Cylinder, it fails to comply with the standards for children under 3 years of age.

Template A (Rattle Test Fixture)

Place a toy or a toy component intended for children under 18 months into the opening of the Template. If the toy can pass through the base of Template A, it fails to comply with the standards for children under 18 months of age.*

Template B (Supplemental Test Fixture)

- For toys or toy components with nearly spherical, hemispherical or circular flared ends.
- Place a toy or a toy component intended for children under 18 months into the opening of the Template. If the toy can pass through the base of Template B, it fails to comply with the standards for children under 18 months of age.*

Template E (Small Ball Test Fixture)

- For toys or toy components with spherical, ovoid, or ellipsoidal object.
- If the ball can pass through the Template, it fails to comply with the standards for children under 3 years of age.*

*Intended for children under 10 months for EN71-1

NOTICE: Test results by the small parts cylinder and these templates are for reference only. Professional testing should be undertaken for verification of standard compliance.
