UK Given Two Additional Years to Accept CE Marking

2023-01-11

On 2022-11-14, the UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy announced the extension of the deadline for the continuous recognition of the CE marking.

It is now confirmed that for the UK market (England, Wales and Scotland), acceptance of the CE marking will continue for a further 2 years.  During this period, the new UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) or the existing CE markings will both be valid.

The reasons cited for extending the original deadline (2022-12-31) for the compulsory application of the UKCA marking are the difficult economic conditions created by post-pandemic shifts in demand and supply, the war in Ukraine and the resultant high energy costs.

Business Secretary Grant Shapps said, “This move will give businesses the breathing space and flexibility they need at this crucial time and ensure that the future UKCA marking is fit for purpose, providing thehighest standard for consumers without harming businesses.”

In fact, it should be noted that businesses have already been using the UKCA mark since 2021-01-01 to demonstrate conformity with product standards in England, Wales and Scotland.  As for the Northern Ireland, it will continue to recognize the CE marking for goods placed on its market.
