On 18 December 2024, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published the following two new European harmonized standards (EN) relating to testing for the compliance of the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC:
| Reference | Title | This EN specifies requirements and test methods for |
| EN 71-18:2024 | Safety of toys - Part 18: Phenol in aqueous (content) and polymeric (migration) toy materials | determining the concentration of phenol in aqueous toy materials and for migration of phenol from polymeric toy materials. |
| EN 71-19:2024 | Safety of toys - Part 19: Migration of bisphenol A from toy materials | migration of bisphenol A from toy materials |
Both ENs are applicable to toys intended for use by children under 36 months or other toys intended to be placed in the mouth.
Substantial Differences to EN 71-10:2005
| Standards | Bottle containing the sample and water | Rate | At temperature | Duration |
| EN 71-18:2024, EN 71-19:2024 | Placed upright on a horizontal shaker | Shaken at: (150 ± 10) cycles / min | (37 ± 2)°C (body temperature) | 180 to 187 minutes |
| EN 71-10:2005 | To be rotated | Rotated at: (60 ± 5) rpm | (20 ± 2)°C (room temperature) | 60 ± 5 minutes |
Therefore, applying the new standards will give different test results from using the existing EN 71-10:2005 “Safety of toys - Part 10: Organic chemicalcompounds - Sample preparation and extraction”.
