On 11 June 2025, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published EN 71-2:2020+A1:2025 “Safety of toys - Part 2: Flammability”. This standard supersedes previous versions: EN 71-2:2020/FprA1 and EN 71-2:2020.This European Standard specifies the categories of flammable materials which are prohibited in all toys and requirements concerning the flammability of certain toys when they are subjected to a small source of ignition.
Citation of this amendment to EN 71-2 is expected in the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC soon.
Substantial Changes
Comparedto the previous version, the following are the major updates:
- Inclusion of definitions in sections 3.3, 3.10, and 3.15 for "cosmetic kits", "gustative games", and "olfactory board games" to support clarification in section 4.1.
- Clarification regarding highly flammable and flammable liquids in chemical toys in section 4.1, aligned with EN 71-5:2015 and EN 71-13:2021+A1:2022.
- Clarification on how to test masks in section 5.3 to ensure that the test flame is not affected by openings.
- Updating the range of allowable water hardness in section 5.4.1.1 c.
- Improvements to Figure 1 and the associated text in section 5.4.1.2.1.
- Correction of editing errors and updates to the Annex information.
- Editing of some clausesto align with ISO 8124-2:2023 without any technical changes.
